Optimize your IT and AV installation – with reliable power distribution strips from GUDE
A Power Distribution Unit (PDU) is a power strip that is installed primarily in IT cabinets, often 19-inch racks, either horizontally or vertically. These network cabinets are usually server cabinets used in data centers and equipment rooms. A PDU distributes power to various loads, such as servers and switches, and can have different types of device connectors: The most common are IEC C13, IEC C19, and grounding-type sockets.
What type of PDU is right for me?
Passive PDU: A simple power strip that distributes power.
Active PDU: An active PDU has other useful functions in addition to power distribution. It can be monitored via a data interface and controlled remotely. An active PDU can be remotely controlled via the LAN interface, e.g. using TCP/IP and protocols such as SNMP, Modbus and HTTP/HTTPS, and can be integrated into monitoring programs. Furthermore, sensors can be connected and their measurements can be evaluated. In this way, for example, the temperature and humidity of the environment can be monitored. Programmable threshold values turn the active PDU into an alarm: If a threshold value is exceeded, the intelligent power strip immediately sends an e-mail.

The right PDU for every application.
Switched PDU
This PDU has a switching function that can be used to switch connected devices on and off. An integrated watchdog enabled an automated and fail-safe switching sequence (self-healing function). The quality of the integrated switching relays plays a vital role in the trouble-free operation of the PDU. Ideally, so-called high inrush relays are used here.

Metered PDU
This PDU has a measuring function that can be used to measure the consumption of connected devices. These can be measurements of electrical quantities such as voltage, current, phase angle, power factor, frequency, active, apparent, and reactive power. The fault current measurement, which is essential for operational safety, can also be recorded. In addition, it is possible to configure limit values for the measured quantities, which, if exceeded, result in an immediate alarm via e-mail. There are three types of current measurement:
Unit-Metered PDU (input side)
The measurement is performed at the input or per bank of the PDU
Outlet-metered PDU (output side)
The measurement is made in relation to each output of the PDU, i.e. per connected load.
Inline-metered PDU (intermediate)
The measurement is made inside the PDU. It is placed before the distribution to provide passive PDUs with metering functionality.
